Everything you need to know before your Mikumi adventure
Getting There
Mikumi sits on the A7 highway and is one of Tanzania’s most accessible parks: ~3–5 hours by road from Dar es Salaam (traffic dependent) and ~1 hour from Morogoro. Scheduled/charter flights operate to Mikumi Airstrip; transfers are arranged by lodges/tour operators. Main entry is near Mikumi town. Dry season (Jun–Oct) offers concentrated wildlife on the Mkata floodplain.
Accommodation
Options include public campsites, special campsites (pre-book), and partner lodges/tented camps in or near the park and Mikumi town. Peak periods book up quickly; confirm availability, park fees, and transfer logistics in advance.
Entry Fees
Fees vary by visitor category (citizen, resident, non-resident), age, and activities (e.g., walking). Vehicle, camping, guiding, and special permit charges may apply. Always verify the latest TANAPA tariffs for Mikumi before travel.
Regulations
Remain on designated tracks and observe speed limits. Stay inside your vehicle unless in designated areas or on an authorized guided walk. Do not feed wildlife. Drones require prior written permission. Off-road driving is restricted to protect habitats and safety.
Visitor Safety
Wildlife regularly crosses near roads and view loops—drive slowly and keep a safe distance. Never approach hippo pools or elephant herds on foot; walking must be with an authorized ranger/guide. Keep windows closed near baboons, secure food, and avoid wearing bright/blue clothing where tsetse flies are active. Carry water, sun protection, and a basic first aid kit. Park hours end at dusk—plan gate times accordingly, and follow all ranger instructions.
