Set within easy reach of Dar es Salaam and Morogoro, Mikumi National Park opens into the vast Mkata floodplain—broad, acacia-dotted grasslands that host elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and giraffe against wide horizons. HISTORY
MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK
Gazetted in the 1960s and expanded over time, Mikumi sits at a strategic crossroads between Tanzania’s coast and interior. The park’s centerpiece—the Mkata floodplain—offers far-reaching views where wildlife congregates around seasonal pans and rivers. The surrounding miombo woodland and low hills shelter predators and a wide variety of plains game.
Linked ecologically to the immense Nyerere (Selous) ecosystem, Mikumi contributes to regional wildlife movements and long-term species resilience. Its accessible game circuits make it a favorite for first-time safaris and weekend escapes from Dar es Salaam—without compromising a true wilderness feel.
A Landscape of Open Plains
Broad grasslands, acacia woodland, and seasonal wetlands provide habitats for elephant, lion, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and giraffe, with excellent raptor and roller sightings. The park balances accessibility and biodiversity—often delivering memorable sightings close to the main circuit.
